Sassafras Kindergarten Update Letter
San Francisco Steiner Free School
A Waldorf/Lifeways, Nature-based Homeschooling Collective in Central San Francisco
We are getting the ball rolling on The San Francisco Steiner Free School. The school initiative has been met with great enthusiasm from friends, colleagues, and prospective members. We are on track for “opening” Sassafras Kindergarten in July, only a few short weeks away!
Along those lines, over the past several weeks, Colene was able to create some initial informational documents that begin to lay out our ideas, plans, and mission/vision. Also she was able to meet with a number of families during weekend and evening moments here and there. More than ten families have shown a strong interest in the school, and we seem to have a solid core group of families forming. Yay!
On Wednesday, July 9th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. will be our first PUBLIC INFORMATIONAL MEETING at Park Library at 1833 Page Street in the Haight. Please come! Tell your friends; spread the word!
We will begin classes on Monday, July 14th, and will hold class on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays through the summer, starting at Julius Kahn playground in the Presidio and then moving on, after a time, to different locations in SF. Our “soft start” will be at 8 a.m.; “firm start” is at 9:15 as we will then be hiking out into the Presidio, returning to the playground at 11 for lunch, with closing circle at noon. If you haven’t had a chance to talk with us prior to this time, it is ok to just show up at 8 a.m., with your child! We will find time to connect, and there will be many opportunities to answer questions.
Our collective meetings will be Saturdays in July, beginning Saturday,July 12, at our home, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Initially, these meetings will be required for all joining families; it is possible we may schedule them for Tuesday evenings if Saturday isn’t a favorable time, so if you are planning to sign up, do let us know what works for you.
Those of you who know Colene well know of her long love and practice of capoeira. We have a wonderful opportunity this summer to collaborate with Mestre Cafu, Colene’s teacher, who also taught at Greenwood School this year; he is running a capoeira camp in July, and we enrolled students of Sassafras Kindergarten, who are fully enrolled, will be able to take part. Let us know if this is of interest.
We are also making progress forming a core “visioning group” for our wider, long-term picture, the San Francisco Center for Steiner Arts and Renewal, or “SF Center STAR”. We have been gathering artists, people working out of anthroposophy, and visionaries who want to meet regularly with us to support this initiative on the spiritual and emotional levels, even while the practical side of the school formation unfolds on the ground.
We, Jeremiah and Colene, are kick-starting all of this activity with a week’s retreatin the wilderness of the Angeles National Forest; we will be working to develop a “FAQ sheet” for Sassafras Kindergarten, and a detailed daily/weekly schedule of our program, as well as working with Steiner’s ideas on the Threefold Social Order and some wonderful pedagogical materials Jeremiah unearthed in Dornach which are not available in the U.S. at all!
Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions, comments, connections — we will mostly be offline next week but look forward to jumping in feet first when we return from our forest retreat!
